cracks begin to show

anytime i say anything negative (i'll never like it, etc) about a particular type of music i end up eating my words. this song is proof once again that i'm being won over to dubstep.

i was in a sporting goods store looking at running shoes when this song came on. i was entranced. it was repetitive and relied on all the same old electronic tricks, tweaked dubstep style...and i loved it.

unlike the old days when i would have to scrounge for paper and a pen to write down a few lines of lyrics in order to ask jeeves about in the next time i was at the public library using the internet, this time i shazzamed it -- or i tried to. it didn't work so i ended up googling the lyrics and this is the video that popped up for my search.

bingo.

PJ Harvey

despite how many people adore her, i'm not totally won over to PJ Harvey yet (if you have song suggestions to get the job done i welcome them!)

that being said, this one is pretty alright. i do love powerful women.

3 days til Christmas!

from wikipedia:

Christmas singles and other Charity work

The Killers have become recognized for their work with the Product Red campaign, headed by Bono and Bobby Shriver. To date they have released six Christmas themed songs and music videos, A Great Big Sled (2006), Don't Shoot Me Santa (2007), Joseph, Better You Than Me (2008), ¡Happy Birthday Guadalupe! (2009), Boots (2010) and The Cowboy's Christmas Ball (2011). On November 30th 2011 they released the (RED) Christmas EP on iTunes which features all six songs. All proceeds from the songs have been donated to Product Red campaign and the fight against AIDS in Africa.

5 days 'til Christmas!

"A festive original. 'Tis the season."

(you should own every christmas song sufjan stevens has ever done. in fact, you should own every song sufjan stevens has ever sung. just saying.)

6 days until Christmas!

and so this week is devoted to christmas music -- of course! (tho, to be honest it would take at least 2 months to do justice to the wealth of amazing christmas tunes i listen to this time of year. what are you favorites? share with me!!!!)

this seemed like an appropriate way to start things off:

(the whole soundtrack is worth having btw! for the nostalgia as well as for the beautiful choir numbers.)

pretty sure i've not only posted about mumford and sons multiple times, but i think i've also posted some version of this song already....

but this song is just SO COOL. i mean...you know what i mean right? don't make me explain myself.

i love this comment on the song: "I have vague recollections of doing a circle-embrace-stomping-dance on this song, at a wedding recently – early morning, wearing what was left of a tux."

Chinatown by Destroyer

brass instruments + the smoothness of this the vocals give it almost an "elevator song" vibe. it still holds on to its coolness tho.

sharon van etten

wow... i have a feeling when this album comes out i'm going to get really obsessed with it.

(hey, and be sure to check out last year's album 'cause it has songs like this:

)

Saturday, December 3, 2011

charli xcx

lower frequencies nailed it:
On the surface, Charli XCX may appear to be all gimmick and no substance. Because of that fact, the 19-year-old pop star seems to often get slapped with the dreaded one-hit-wonder label. But songs like “Stay Away” are perfect examples of why there’s reason to believe that there’s more to Charli XCX than meets the eye. Sure, her synth-heavy 80′s pop is pretty imitative, but she is so good at playing within the confines of the well-worn genre that the track feels genuinely emotional and fresh.

pretty great eh?

photocomfort

you want to listen to this. i know it's an extra click to get to lowerfrequencies rather than just listening here... but TRUST ME this song is worth it. i've been replaying it like mad.

been feelin' the electronicsynthvibe lately. haven't made up my mind completely about this one yet -- it doesn't grab me... but it is somehow interesting... hmm...

Rostam

this song sounds SO FAMILIAR and i can't put my finger on it.... OH WAIT!

i got it. it's sorta vampire weekend-y but more spaced out and breath-y if that makes sense. anyhow, listen to the whole thing. it's pretty rad.

Wednesday, November 23, 2011

i still think the wizard of oz is one of the greatest movies ever

and i still love the way judy garland sings "somewhere over the rainbow best"

but even that classic performance, that we all know on love, is outdone by this one that i only recently discovered...

(one youtube description: Judy Garland "Over The Rainbow" as Hobo in one of the most emotional versions of Somewhere Over The Rainbow".)

I've read that he's a mix of Devendra Banhart and the Microphones - but less weird.

a GREAT song:

ingrid michaelson covers "can't help falling in love with you"

i love her voice.
i was recently revisiting some of my old favorites of hers, so it seemed serendipitous when a friend emailed me this absolutely lovely cover... it will break your heart in all the best ways:

never let me go

TWO POSTS TODAY!

I  just wanted to quote what Lower Frequencies wrote about a song from Florence + the Machine's new album --- which is all i've been listening to lately!  (click here for the album version - it will BLOW YOU AWAY and click here for a live version)

Florence Welch’s vocal power is undeniable, but what’s so impressive on this track is that she exhibits both her powers of control AND her ability to sing to the heavens. When she is doing her thing–belting with all her might–you never get the feeling that is it anything but totally genuine and earnest. Florence doesn’t “sing.” Florence simply releases, and the result is a vocal performance that, even with its hi-fi, highly-produced sound, is startlingly human.

All In A Day - The Open Sea

this is such a sweet song. i love the harmonies between the his & her voices -- and it definitely appeals to the weepy woman in me ;)

from lower frequencies:
"...we have a true rock album that reminds us of The Beatles (compare “Love Like a River” with Oh Darling), Deep Purple, Paul Simon and more. This is not something we are able to say everyday while listening to music."

yep. this is a "cool" song.

another by typhoon. i think it's rad how they use vocals to make the sound of a train. and i love how it all  crescendos then decrescendos. so cool.

i haven't fallen in love with them the way many of my friends have... but i am kinda crazy about this song:

Monday, October 17, 2011

"the bad in each other" is my favorite song off of Feist's new album

so i follow another music blog (much like mine) called "lower frequencies" and i have reposted a few things from there so i thought it was about time to give credit where credit was due!

THANKS L.F.

...especially for reminding me about feist's new album and letting me hear this amazing song!

have you ever heard an arcade fire like this? neither have i.

thanks l.f.

Monday, October 10, 2011

piano guys do rolling in the deep

SO ima do another week of covers. not rap covers this time. just random covers i like. lemme know if you're into this!

i've always like classical-styled covers of pop songs. (it's the only way i'd listen to linkn park haha)

so this is a cool one of a favorite by adele - it was already an epic song, this makes it even more so (in my opinion)

Saturday, October 8, 2011

RAD covers of RAP songs - “Hey Ya” (OutKast) – Obidiah Parker

okay, so hey ya isn't really a RAP song... but it's pretty cool how different sounding this one is. and how it totally works. so i'm counting it. and it's the last one of the week.  DID YA ENJOY RAD RAP COVERS? i did.

Friday, October 7, 2011

Thursday, October 6, 2011

RAD covers of RAP songs - “Whatever You Like” (T.I.) – Anya Marina

i still remember listening the T.I. version w/my brothers in the car, and 14 year old Jamal (who LOVED this song) over and over.

i like how different this pop-y LADY VERSION is:

Tuesday, October 4, 2011

RAD covers of RAP songs - "Gin and Juice" (Snoop Dogg) -- The Gourds

be wary. no editing of foul snoop content here. but the way it's sung you almost don't hear it. it's weird.

***the MOST AMAZING comment on the youtube video:
when you listen to this you realize there's no difference between hillbillys and Gangsters

Monday, October 3, 2011

Saturday, October 1, 2011

RAD covers of RAP songs - “Hot In Herre” (Nelly) – Jenny Owen Youngs

SO, to celebrate October we are going to spend a week enjoying RAD covers of RAP songs. i mean, i love me a good cover and a good rap cover just hooks me every dang time.

ahhhhh irony in a cover.

Drift through a time portal with “I’ve Been Glad”, the opening track from Die Jungen’s latest, "Just A Dream." Think Panda Bear meets The Everly Brothers.

sleeping at last

FROM WIKIPEDIA On July 15, 2010 the band announced via their website that starting on October 1, 2010 until September 1, 2011 they will be releasing three songs on the first day of each month for one year. They have named this project 'Yearbook'. The songs will be released on their website in twelve separate EPs named after the month in which they are released (E.g. January, February, etc.)

This song is from April. I love it.

Daniel Johnston covered by Sparklehorse with The Flaming Lips

So, Daniel Johnston is a brilliant songwriter. I mean, even if you don't love his style or sound, you have to give him credit for some of the remarkable songs he has written. It's really amazing (and believe it or not, I don't say that lightly).

I really love hearing his songs sung by other favorite musicians. It's a neat.

This one is beautiful

Jelly Roll Morton

MORE JAZZ!

I first learned about Jelly Roll in a graduate folklore class - we listened to some recordings of him talking about life where he was from. He's quite a character.

And of course, we listened to him play...he's the man.

Thursday, August 11, 2011

what would you dance to at your wedding?

what's your style? i think it should be something with a little quirkiness...older, maybe corny -- but not sappy. so what do you think?

doris troy?

neil young?

and do you slow dance (above) or try for something a little snappier?

maxine nightingale?

a friend of mine danced with her dad to billy joel (it made me cry)

i can't decide if the video is supposed to be "epic" or "ironic" but either way the song sounds like something that should be playing while you fly through the air (on a motorbike or whatev.)

a song away!

so... this one was playing at tj-maxx and i shazam-ed it. it brought me back to the days of hearing songs while shopping and trying to write down lines of lyrics in order to search them out later on on the internet at the library computer. found a lot of my favorite tunes that way, tho this was a lot easier :)

a nice pop song eh? i love it.

a little bit of everything

i'll admit it... this song gets me a little teary every time i listen to it.

With his back against the San Francisco traffic,
On the bridges side that faces towards the jail,
Setting out to join a demographic,
He hoists his first leg up over the rail.
And a phone call is made,
Police cars show up quickly.
The sergeant slams his passenger door.
He says, "Hey son why don't you talk through this with me,
Just tell me what you're doing it for."

Oh, it's a little bit of everything,
It's the mountains,
It's the fog,
It's the news at six o'clock,
It's the death of my first dog,
It's the angels up above me,
It's the song that they don't sing,
It's a little bit of everything.

An older man stands in a buffet line,
He is smiling and holding out his plate,
And the further he looks back into his timeline,
That hard road always had led him to today,
And making up for when his bright future had left him,
Making up for the fact that his only son is gone,
And letting everything out once, His server asks him,
Have you figured out yet, what it is you want?

I want a little bit of everything,
The biscuits and the beans,
Whatever helps me to forget about
The things that brought me to my knees,
So pile on those mashed potatoes,
And an extra chicken wing,
I'm having a little bit of everything.

Somewhere a pretty girl is writing invitations,
To a wedding she has scheduled for the fall,
Her man says, "Baby, can I make an observation?
You don't seem to be having any fun at all."
She said, "You just worry about your groomsmen and your shirt-size,
And rest assured that this is making me feel good,
I think that love is so much easier than you realize,
If you can give yourself to someone,
Then you should."

Cause it's a little bit of everything,
The way you choke, the way you ache,
It is waking up before you,
So I can watch you as you wake.
So in the day in late September,
It's not some stupid little ring,
I'm giving a little bit of everything.

Oh, it's a little bit of everything,
It's the matador and the bull,
It's the suggested daily dosage,
It is the red moon when it's full.
All these psychics and these doctors,
They're all right and they're all wrong,
It's like trying to make out every word,
When they should simply hum along,
It's not some message written in the dark,
Or some truth that no one's seen,
It's a little bit of everything.

El Scorcho

I'm part of the cult. Still love this.
From Paste:

"The “El Scorcho” video
Pinkerton, Weezer’s sophomore release, was supposed to be the record that ended Cuomo’s career. Even he dismissed it initially, and for a while the band refused to play “El Scorcho” or any of the other songs from the experimental record. It became a cult favorite, however, and established a credibility for Cuomo that even a Katy Perry collaboration can’t tarnish."
