It’s not exactly the Midas touch, but everything Lykke Li puts her hands on these days seems to be transformed into something sonically endearing, imbued with her signature seductive playfulness. The Deportees track, “A New Name To Go By,” is utterly fun, but also exhibits restraint, holding back from being an unadulterated and ecstatic jam that wouldn’t hold quite as much weight. Instead, with its mix of steel pan and vocal harmonies, “A New Name To Go By” exists as a strangely warm ballad–the kind of tune that could soundtrack a climactic moment in a 90′s movie. But that’s not to say the track is predictable; on the contrary, it’s littered with little surprises throughout, and that’s what makes it so rewarding and revisitable. Islands and Shores is out now via Stranded Rekords.
